Surrounded by gardens and parkland, Blickling Hall was built in the early
17th century and is one of England's great Jacobean houses. Blickling is famed
for its spectacular long gallery, which has a Jacobean plaster ceiling and a
remarkable collection of 12,000 books.
The garden has colour all the year round; spring bulbs, magnolias, azaleas
and rhododendrons, herbaceous borders and glorious autumn colour. There is also
a Temple, Orangery, Dry Moat and Secret Garden to explore in the grounds. The
gardens and parkland offer many good walks, ranging from a short stroll to
longer walks in the 4,777-acre estate. Contact Reception for details of guided
walks. Cycle Hire is also available.
The parkland plays host to several summer concerts - and also the Aylsham
Agricultural Show, on August Bank Holiday Monday.
The Garden Rooms offer that perfect setting for receptions, lunches or
dinners, plus civil marriage ceremonies and receptions.
Close to Blickling is Felbrigg Hall, which stands in its own 1,750-acre
estate, situated within North Norfolk's "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty."
One of the finest 17th century houses, it has its original 18th century
furniture and pictures, including one of the finest collections of "Grand Tour"
paintings by a single artist.
The traditional walled garden has been restored and has an 18th century
octagonal Dove House. The garden also has an impressive orangery and a national
collection of colchicums. There are woodland and lakeside walks.
Both Blickling and Felbrigg offer refreshments ranging from that simple cuppa
to a full menu of superbly cooked local and regional produce. There are also
plants for sale and a well-stocked gift shop at each location.
Various events are held throughout the year at both houses - see leaflets for
details of these, other facilities and information on opening times.
