The Bure Valley Railway is Norfolk's largest narrow gauge railway, operating
on a regular basis between Aylsham and Wroxham, a distance of 9 miles. The line
was built in 1989-1990 on the track-bed of the former East Norfolk Railway,
dating back to 1880, and opened in 1990, with stations at Aylsham and Wroxham,
and 3 unstaffed halts en route at Coltishall, Buxton and Brampton. The journey
time is 45 minutes. The railway carries in excess of 120,000 passengers each
year. Several coaches are equipped to carry wheelchair users and their carers.
The Aylsham station is open each day, whether or not trains are operating.
You can visit the workshop, model railway, gift shop and the
Whistlestop Restaurant which endorses the town's Cittaslow ethos with its
locally sourced food cooked on the premises. The restaurant can also be hired
for children's parties. Refreshments are also available at Wroxham station.
There is ample free car and coach parking at both stations with fully equipped
facilities for the disabled.
Apart from being a visitor attraction in its own right, the railway provides
connections with the Bittern Line at Wroxham (and thence to Norwich or the
coast), and cruises on the Broads. Ask about combined ticket facilities.
Other popular "specials" are the "Day out with Thomas" weekends, Santa, Mince
Pie, and Teddy Bears Day. For all those aspiring train drivers, Steam Locomotive
Driving Courses are available during off-peak periods.
