Shop in Aylsham - where the virtues of the past ware combined with the
amenities of the present. Aylsham has two - soon to be three (2006) -
supermarkets. So have many towns. Aylsham has multiples - a few. And it has
banks, building societies, and estate agents, a travel agent, a post office,
newsagents. Nothing apparently different there. But what it also has are many,
many individually owned and family owned shops. And how many towns now have
those.
In Aylsham you will find three family - truly family - butchers. You will
find the Norfolk Independent Greengrocer of the Year (2006) - much of the food
they sell they grow. There is a baker who bakes his own bread, and sells
literally home- made jams and marmalade and home-cooked hams. Here there is an
Ironmonger who will sell you the five nails you require rather than the ten in a
plastic packet that you don't. And an electrical retailer who actually knows
about the goods he sells - and has sold enough to be given the sales prize of
the year by a delighted manufacturer. Personally owned clothes shops, personally
owned florists, personally owned petshops, a bicycle shop, computers, carpet
shops, furniture, gifts, a cobbler, hairdressers, fitness salons, antiques,
books, records, clothes shops, artists' materials, a design studio and a kitchen
shop.
And what the staff of all Aylsham shops have in common, whether they work in
a supermarket, a multiple, or a shop that is family-owned, is a desire to help
you, the customer; for you will find that not only do they know their stock, but
what they don't know the/ will take the trouble to rind out.
So come along to Aylsham and try the shops, where you will find people that
are willing to spend time on you.
And don't forget there are general markets every Monday and Friday, the
Aylsham Country Market selling home-made and home-grown produce/crafts every
Friday (formerly the W.I. Market), a fully FARMA accredited Farmers' Market
every 1st Saturday each month (except January) and specialist and general
auctions at Keys saleground every Monday plus other days. And to add to this
feast, yet even more specialist markets are planned.
