First Cittaslow in Norfolk |
The first Cittaslow in Norfolk
How Aylsham became Cittaslow
Alysham was originally selected as one of several towns in the East of
England that were to take part in the Cittaslow Pilot project that the East of
England Development Agency funded.
Aylsham didn’t change to become a Cittaslow town – Cittaslow represents what
Aylsham already is – a ‘real’ town which is quite distinct from anywhere else,
with a strong community spirit, high quality local producers and shops and the
desire to evolve in a way that is sustainable and does not damage the things
that people value.
The Aylsham Partnership worked with a consultant provided by the East of
England towards becoming Cittaslow, and before the pilot project ended Aylsham
formed a Slow Food Convivium and was awarded Cittaslow status.
How Cittaslow works in our town
Cittaslow Aylsham is now a sub committee of Alysham Town Council. Elizabeth
Jones, the chair of Aylsham council is also the chair of Cittaslow Aylsham, and
is a director of Cittaslow UK CIC.
The Aylsham Partnership – along with other organisations in the town – is
still very much involved with Cittaslow Aylsham, but the town council is the
lead body.
